We have launched the official a la Carte Kitchen Blog - a new home for the monthly Simon Says, recipes, event trends and tips and more! Follow www.alacartekitchenblog.wordpress.com and visit us as we create our new e-space!
This month, Simon tells us how to use end of summer produce in amazing ways and gives the secret ingredient away to entertaining.

Venue of the Month: Glenn Gould Studio

Located in the Canadian Broadcasting Centre across from the Metro Toronto Convention Centre and Skydome, Glenn Gould Studio is a short walk from the Bay-University-King Street business area of downtown Toronto.
The venue can be used successfully for conferences, meetings, press conferences, rear-screen video projection, screenings and shareholder meetings. It can accommodate up to 341 people comfortably in a surprisingly intimate environment that offers both privacy and elegance. The adjoining lobby works well for receptions and informal gatherings.
Its location in the Canadian Broadcasting Centre allows access to state of the art communications and recording facilities. Satellite uplink connection, multitrack recording and prop rental can all be coordinated through Glenn Gould Studio.
The space has been recently renovated and they will hosting an invite-only open house on October 30 from 5-8pm.

A Message from our dear friend
Salah Bachir

As you may know, since Christmas I have been receiving dialysis 3 times a week at St. Joseph's Health Centre. Each session lasts for 4½ hours and I spend much of this time on BlackBerry or sitting watching a clunky TV that is more than a decade old and sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. The same situation goes for chemo patients in the oncology units.

So I want to raise funds to upgrade the TVs in the dialysis and oncology units at St. Joe's and improve the viewing experience for those hundreds of patients, like me, that have to sit in chairs receiving treatment for extended periods.

Ideally St. Joe's would require around 125 units that come with state-of-the-art personal touch screens which attach to chairs/beds and offer a variety of services ranging from basic cable to internet, movies, games and other services.

As most hospital donations go to primary care, these TV systems would not be covered. We need to raise around $150,000 for the upgrades.

So we are having a NON-GALA GALA.

ARE NOT invited to a long, formal evening of so-so food, questionable entertainment and uncomfortable shoes in support of St. Joseph's Health Centre.

Save the money you'd spend on a new outfit, parking and babysitter and put it all toward this great cause!

Please contribute what you can, by May 1
st if possible.

Cheques should be payable to St. Joseph's Health Centre Foundationand sent to

102 Atlantic Avenue | Toronto, ON | M6K 1X9 | (: 416.539.8800 (255) |

Fax : 416.539.8511

Alternatively, you can also provide Leo Alefounder (above) with credit card details (VISA, MasterCard and Amex.. all accepted)

Your donation will be tax deductible! In order to issue a tax receipt, St. Joe's will require your first and last name and mailing address.

Thank you so much for your support. It will make a world of difference.

To our dear friends

CANFAR first began as the vision of a small group of individuals who recognized a great need, and has grown into thousands of volunteers, donors, and supporters across Canada. Thank you for believing that funding HIV and AIDS research is just as relevant today as it was 25 years ago!

And we need more Canadians to realize it is still relevant, because we have yet to find a vaccine for HIV or a cure for AIDS. We are not yet finished, and for this reason we invite you to continue your essential support on this anniversary day. Please help us end AIDS now.

You can get involved on our anniversary through one (or all!) of the following ways:

1. Make a donation  of $25 or an amount of your choice,

2. Watch the premier of "Thinking Positive with Valerie Pringle",

our exciting new web series,

3. Tweet using the hashtag #CANFAR25 or celebrate with us on Facebook,

Dear Friends,
Autumn is here with all its riches! It's a very exciting time of the year and we cannot get enough of it!
We have started preserving this year's harvest using our favorite recipes, and our product is available at the a la Carte Cafe

Also come and join us on Saturday , September 29, for Harvest Day at the Toronto Botanical Garden and enjoy a live presentation by Chef Simon Kattar on the various methods of preserving and utilizing tomatoes this season.

Harvest in a Jar

The art of preserving the bounty of each season is an age old practice that has been passed from one genertaion to the next. Throughout the world people have perfected a variety of preservation methods. We at à la Carte are humbled by the wealth of knowledge we have accumulated over the years and are proud to share it with you.

In loving memory of our dear friend
Linda Santino

After a courageous battle with cancer, Linda passed away in the early hours of May 24, 2011 at Princess Margaret Hospital.

Linda, our sister, daughter and friend. We here at a la carte are greatly saddened to lose her. We shared a life time of unforgettable moments filled with humour, affection and appreciation. That's who she was and still is to us, full of life and always ready to stand by a friend. She always managed to make things look easy, and made us smile at the most terrible of times. We need her smile now perhaps more than ever.

Linda had such a generous heart and her support of fundraisers and charities was unrivalled.

Thank you!!February 2011

Dear Friends

We are humbled by your amazing response to our offer on Tourtieres throughout February. We hoped to sell a few Tourtieres to support Simon's Waladi Child Education Fund of Toronto, but we ended up selling out within the first week! Of course making more Tourtieres at that point was a given, but to think that we didn't have more chutney prepared was a scary thought. It was truly remarkable when our friends at Sable&Rosenfeld extended their incredibly generous support and provided us with their delectable Port spiked fruit chutney. We are truly thankful and utterly touched by this wonderful gesture. We have also decided to extend our Tourtiere offer until the end of March in hopes to deliciously raise more money for the charity.

Dear Friends,

This Movember, the month formerly known as November I've decided to donate my face to raising awareness about prostate cancer.  My donation and commitment is the growth of a moustache for the entire month of Movember, which I know willSIMON KATTARgenerate conversation, controversy and laughter.

I'm doing this because 4,400 men die of prostate cancer in Canada each year and one in six men will be diagnosed during his lifetime.

This is a cause that I feel passionately about and I'm asking you to support my efforts by making a donation to Prostate Cancer Canada.

Thank you in advance for helping me to support men's health.
